Call for Participation: 1st Cyprus Transport Hackathon | January 17, 2026

The Society and Urban Form (SURF) Lab of the University of Cyprus invites students, researchers, professionals and innovators to participate in the 1st Cyprus Transport Hackathon, a national initiative dedicated to rethinking mobility and transport systems in Cyprus.

The Hackathon is co-organised by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, Municipality of Strovolos, University of Cyprus (through SURF Lab and the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence), Youth Board of Cyprus (ONEK), Hack{Cyprus}, and GDG Cyprus.

About the Hackathon

The Cyprus Transport Hackathon is a one-day innovation marathon where multidisciplinary teams collaborate intensively to design creative, practical and scalable solutions addressing real-world challenges in transport and mobility.

Participants will work in teams, supported by mentors from academia, the public sector and the tech community, and will present their solutions to a multidisciplinary Jury.


Who Can Participate

The Hackathon is open to teams of up to five members, including:

  • University and high-school students
  • Researchers and early-career academics
  • Software developers and data scientists
  • UX/UI designers
  • Engineers, urban planners and architects
  • Professionals and practitioners in mobility and transport

Multidisciplinary teams are strongly encouraged.


Thematic Challenges

Participants will develop solutions within one of the following challenge areas:

  1. Smart Public Transport & Real-Time Information
  2. Multimodal Mobility & Micromobility
  3. Road Safety, Congestion & Risk Prevention
  4. Inclusive Mobility (tourism, regional areas, students and people with disabilities)

What the Hackathon Offers

Participants will benefit from:

  • Mentoring and workshops by experts from SURF, KIOS, Hack{Cyprus}, GDG Cyprus, ONEK and the Ministry
  • Networking with public authorities, researchers and innovation communities
  • Pitching their solutions to a professional Jury
  • Visibility and potential pilot implementation of selected ideas

Prizes for the top three teams:

  • 1st Prize: €3000
  • 2nd Prize: €1500
  • 3rd Prize: €700
