Mariam Shulqamy

Mariam Shulqamy is an urban designer and a Ph.D. researcher at the institute for urban planning and European urban studies at RWTH Aachen University. Her Ph.D. research focuses on exploring the relationship between urban form and and socio-economic processes through an evidencebased approach. The research aims to address the relationship between spatial configuration and socio-economic phenomena in order to counteract socio-spatial segregation in cities. As an urban designer, she worked on different projects in the private sector addressing issues of sustainable urban development in Egypt and Germany. She also worked in the academic sector as an assistant lecturer and research associate, collaborating with universities, NGOs and governmental institutions. She participated as well in international workshops, competitions, and research projects including: the impact of technological innovation on transforming city regions (2021), water sensitive urbanism in coastal cities (2020), climate adaptative revitalization in historic cities (2019) and the research project “Fixing streets and spaces” co-funded by the Erasmus+ program (2018). She was awarded several research grants including the DAAD research grant and the Erasmus+ mobility project fund. She holds a BSc degree in Architecture from Cairo University in Egypt and a MSc degree in Sustainable Urban Design from Brandenburg Technical University (BTU) in Germany. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at RWTH Aachen University in Germany.
